The recent decision by the Government of China to stop receiving waste for recycling from the UK will have far reaching consequences.
Although the decision was intimated approximately 6 months ago, there has been very little done by the UK Government to mitigate the problems this decision will cause.
Over 2.5bn coffee cups are used and thrown away each year in the UK. Consumers are given false hope by Coffee Companies who had previously put the recycling logo on the cups. Although these cups can be recycled eventually, it is not something that is routinely done in the UK. Leaving most of the coffee cups either in landfill, incinerated or put to China. The lack of alternatives available for the recycling of plastics in the UK could end up with much of the recyclable plastics in the country ending up in landfill or being incinerated.
It is imperative that as a community we start to look at reducing our use of plastics. Why not purchase a travel mug and re-use it on a number of occasions rather than single use cups? Maybe local businesses could make a reduction in costs for hot drinks if you bring your own cup?
Reduce the usage of plastic bags, maybe have community groups supplying cloth bags to be available in shops.
There are a number of things we can be doing as a community to reduce our waste. Time to start the way we mean to go on.
