Support For Those Interested In Becoming Childminders

The Strathearn area is soon going to suffer from a shortage of after school childcare it seems.  Thankfully Perth and Kinross Council’s Childcare Strategy Team are taking steps to help local residents who would be interested in becoming a childminder.

Perth & Kinross Council’s Childcare Strategy Team works with people who are considering childminding as a career by running free introductory sessions and pre-registration training courses as well as offering start-up grants and ongoing support.

Morning and evening introductory sessions are being offered on Wednesday 2 May and again on Wednesday 29 August.  Pre-registration courses will follow later in May and in September with the option of attending for two whole days or over four evenings.  A crèche can be provided for the daytime introductory sessions and the two day courses if required.

Families in some parts of Perth and Kinross have told the Childcare and Family Information Service that they would use a local childminder – if only there was one available.

The Team is therefore particularly keen to hear from people in any of the following areas who might be interested in becoming a childminder:

– Perth area: Perth City Centre; Bridgend; Balbeggie; Scone; Abernethy; Bridge of Earn; Almondbank; Methven; Stanley.
– Crieff and Auchterarder area: Blackford, Braco;  Greenloaning; Comrie; Crieff.
– Highland Perthshire: Aberfeldy; Birnam ; Blair Atholl; Grandtully.
– Kinross Area: Crook of Devon; Kinnesswood; Milnathort.

Perth & Kinross Council’s Convener of Education and Lifelong Learning Councillor Caroline Shiers commented: “Childminding is a very rewarding career for individuals and a vital service in local communities for working parents. As a childminder you are self-employed and can provide a flexible service to meet the needs of your own family and the families using your service.  I would encourage anyone thinking about a fulfilling career working with children and their families to attend an introduction to Childminding session or get in touch with the Council’s Childcare Strategy Team.”
