As a decision looms on the future of two Perth & Kinross Health & Social Care Partnership care homes in her constituency – Parkdale in Auchterarder and Beechgrove in Perth – Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament for the Perthshire South & Kinross-shire constituency, is urging local councillors not to close or privatise the homes.
Speaking today (Monday) Ms Cunningham said:
“Since the consultation on the future of these two homes was announced in September, I have had a wide range of communications and meetings with constituents concerned about the potential outcome and with those who will be involved in the decision making process.
“It is very clear that these homes are valued extremely highly by the residents, their families and by the wider communities in which they are situated.
“One of the main arguments that has been put forward for changing the nature of provision of these services is that there is a persistent level of under-occupation at the homes but that is a claim that does not square with the experience of my constituents who have tried to get places for relatives in these homes.
“Nor, crucially, does it square with the potential future demographic changes within Perth & Kinross. We are a growing population and an aging population and we need to ensure that facilities that will be needed in the future are not abandoned now.
“The current provision of care homes by the Perth & Kinross Health & Social Care Partnership with one home in Perth, one to the north and one to the south, represents a good geographical spread across the council area and to close any one of those three homes would affect that balance which allows people to find a care home as close as possible to the community with which they have ties of family and friendship.
“As the end of the consulation approaches, I urge all those involved in the process to bear these important factors in mind and ensure that a decision is reached that reflects these concerns.
“Above all, the decision must be made with compassion and an understanding of the impact whatever option is chosen will have on the residents and their families.”
