Girlguiding Trip to PGL Paris and Disneyland – August 2019

From a jokey suggestion about taking Brownies to Disneyland in March 2019, 15 months of planning later – we did just that.

When we decided that it could actually be possible to take the girls to stay at a PGL Chateau outside Paris and have a visit to Disneyland, we put the wheels in motion. A team of leaders was put together and flyers were handed out to parents of Brownies in Auchterarder and Blackford, to see if there would be any interest in the trip. We ended up with lots of Brownies, a Guide and two Young Leaders along with our adult team, a total group of 37.

We had an initial parents evening where we decided that we would fly over rather than go by coach, extra fundraising but a better option. I had contacted PGL, a company that plan holidays for Girlguiding, Scout etc to get some ideas of our options while we were there. So started the fundraising – a bingo tea, quiz nights, Auchterarder Common Good Fund, bag packing, race night, raffles and more. We have to say a huge thank you to the support we received from local businesses, donating prizes and gift vouchers, they were so generous. We have to say thanks to businesses outwith Auchterarder and everyone else who donated prizes to us, it was very kind of you all.

The parents and girls were involved from the start, running events, donating prizes, supporting the fundraising evenings, bag packing etc, thank you all so much. Our treasurer for the trip, Louise, did a wonderful job successfully applying for grants to help us reach our target of over £15000. So, again thanks to everyone involved, especially our leaders, as without them we couldn’t have had the trip!

Our trip was amazing, we had a busy fun packed time in Paris – we visited La cité des science ( Paris science centre), climbed the Eiffel Tower, took a boat trip on the River Seine, had an interactive at Le Grand Rex cinema, we visited the beautiful historic village of Brie-Comte-Robert for a treasure hunt and, of course, we visited Disney. Our day in Disneyland was the highlight of the trip for the girls. At the Chateau the girls were entertained by the staff, they had games, dressing up and a Disco. One of the Brownies celebrated her birthday while we were there and enjoyed a cake and celebrations.

Our adventure didn’t stop there – when we arrived at the airport for our flight home, it had been cancelled! The girls were very good and took it in their stride. We spent the night in a ‘posh’ hotel, that’s what the girls said, and the next day we had to fly home from Paris to Bristol and then Bristol to Edinburgh. The parents were very understanding and supportive throughout the whole thing. Since our return we have had marvellous feedback from girls and parents alike and the good news is – we would do it all again in a heartbeat! The suggestions for our next trip include – Hawaii, Australia, Canada, New York, Holland and not forgetting Hollywood!!!
