We received a query regarding the Duchess of Auchterarder, any help would be gratefully received by Melissa. See letter below –
I am a freelance writer currently working on a book based on a large
collection of letters I inherited from my grandmother. These letters
were written by her close friend Ethel North who was lady’s maid and
companion to Lady Winifred Burghclere, the sister of the 5th Earl of
Carnarvon, the one who discovered Tutankhamun’s tomb.
If you would like to know more about the project, the website can be
In one of Ethel’s letters to my grandmother, written from Airlie Castle,
Forfar, in 1919, she mentions that Lady Burghclere is about to walk to
Braemar to the Duchess of Auchterarder, a journey of about 30 miles.
(Lady B was very fit!)
Despite my best efforts, I have been unable to find out anything about
the Duchess of Auchterarder for my “end-notes” for this letter and I
wondered if you would be able to suggest any source of local information
that might be able to help me. I was hoping there might be a library in
Auchterarder or Braemar that I could contact but I haven’t managed to
find the details of one so far.
Thank you for taking the time to read this email and if you are able to
help in any way, that would be very much appreciated indeed.
