Auchterarder SWI September Meeting

The September meeting was opened by Diane Holme, President, who welcomed all to the first meeting of the 2017 – 2018 session. This is a very exciting time for us as we celebrate our hundredth anniversary this year. She mentioned the events enjoyed over the summer – afternoon tea, an evening walk in Perth followed by high tea and the federation afternoon tea at Scone Racecourse. Business and correspondence were dealt with before our speaker for the evening was introduced.

John Blackie of Heritage Gardens spoke first about what led him to work in horticulture, then explained how gardens became so varied once the intrepid Victorian plant collectors discovered how to transport plants successfully from all round the world. After this introduction John gave a very interesting slide show of gardening through the year, showing us what would be blooming and what jobs we should be doing each month. This was interesting and informative to all, whether gardening in a large plot or on a small scale. This was followed by a lively question and answer session.

The raffle was drawn and a delicious supper served by the committee.
