The Inner Wheel of Auchterarder and District are holding a Step and Smile sponsored walk and lunch on 28th February at Auchterarder Golf Club to raise funds for Beat, the UK’s eating disorder charity.
With approximately 30 members taking part, there will be both a short and long walk to ensure everyone who wishes can take part no matter how far they usually walk. The short walk will be from the golf club car park up to and including The Oak Walk. The long walk will leave an hour earlier, 10.30am and will include some of the Provost’s Walk.
The Association of Inner Wheel clubs in GB&I has chosen Beat as its charity of the year and National President, Zena Coles said ‘My 18 year old granddaughter was hospitalised due to an eating disorder. I know many of our members will know of people who have experience of this distressing problem, either through friends, or like me because a member of the family is a sufferer.’
At least 725,000 people in the UK are affected by an eating disorder, they are serious with anorexia having the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric condition. Early intervention is crucial in saving lives and Beat can provide the first contact to guide and support people in accessing the treatment they need. The charity supports thousands of people every year through its helplines, message board and text services, which are funded by supporters.
Inner Wheel’s support will help to fund Beat’s national helplines and Young Ambassador programme for volunteers aged 14-25 across the UK with personal experience of eating disorders.
Beat’s Community Fundraising Officer Andrea Auburn, said ‘We are delighted that Inner Wheel of Auchterarder and District are organising this walk to help Beat to fund our helplines and work with young people. Their kind support will help Beat to change the lives of more people affected by eating disorders.’
